Hi Kash,
I've got 3 tattoos and various piercings. The metalwork is purely aesthetic but I use tattooing as a shamanic process. To be inked brings to the surface something buried within the spirit. It creates a bond between the flesh and the spirit, and suffering the experience itself of being tattooed can bring about a trance state. This applies for piercing as well I think, anything which causes physical discomfort. Think about the shamanic practices employed in the near and far east, the sun ritual etc where the practitioner is hung by cockerels' claws through the ribs from a tree or similar for days. Or the ecstatic rituals of other tribes who pierce themselves with swords and skewers. The Kumbh Mela gave some good examples of this, the gurus who do things like spend their lives standing up, or with one arm in the air. It's also a kind of sacrifice, and can be seen as a mark of devotion to deity or spirit. Using one's own designs for tattooing heightens this process. It brings one closer to the inner self, and to the spirits who walk with us.
Besides, tattooing is strangely addictive, once you've had one it isn't long until you're planning the next one!
Blessings

well said honey.
people often ask me if i think i will regret my tats, but they represent a path of self growth, from when i was 17 and just breaking away from convention, to the present day, some of my work was a bit badly planned, but they stay as a lesson to myself, a tattooist once said i should cover over the ones on my back when i get a full backpiece done, as the are a bit awkwardly placed, but i would never dream of it, and as they are all my own drawings, they show a part of me which yo dont usually see day to day. and yes it is hopelesszly addictive, i have one planned in my head now, but i would lose so much modeling work if i went through with it, strightaway.
do any of you do conventions, i am doing the whole season this year with paul callaby (photographer for skin deep magasine, and editor of new mag "pierced") my first one is in south wales on the weekend of the 3rd march
