Pet Corner...

Seeing munkipoos mailing on rats and vans and Dionnes responce as a loving pet owner has got me remembering something.

What pets do you lot have? I bet mainly cats, rats and at least one snake!

This is cos I have lost track of the number of times someones pet cat seems to be mentioned in Wicca books. In fact I grit my teeth when I see under the acknowledgements there is a To Tiddles my cat, for love and snuggles.

Does the dominance of cats in Wicca once again show how female attitudes can sometimes seem to dominate the craft? Where are the faithful dogs? Where is the male Witch with the cat called Puskers?

Remember balance in all things ... definitely time for paracetamol now!

I've got six, yes, six cats, and I live in a small two-bedroomed house with three teenage boys too!! My cats are wonderful - Nero is my witch cat. He's black and lithe, and totally telepathic. He loves me more than anything in the world, and loves to lie wrapped around my neck, on my shoulders, dribbling down my neck in ecstacy. The other five are all related: Rio, a large, placid "Dolmio" cat (feline version of Dalmation, we decided), his sister, Jenny Any Dots, who is a big fat mama, and very vocal. Her three grown up offspring are Silky Paws, another very very hairy Dolmio, with paws like a polar bear, and his two sisters. They are Gumbie (you can tell we're TS Eliot fans!) who is the huntress and litters the front garden with rodent corpses from the fields and woods opposite the house, and Bramble, an evil and wicked little tabby whose aim in life is to torment Nero, mainly by trying to claim me for her own human. Am I sad or what? I adore my cats. When my boys have left home, I shall be the little old lady who lives at the top of the hill with all her cats!! I'd have been burned in earlier times!

I so much want a rat but.. theres no one to look after it.. because they need at least a hours handling a day right??? sot heyll stay tame? Im also keen on the idea of a Ferret but looks like ill have to wait til I move out... and take all the animals apart from ... the Cockatiel and the dogs (theyre my sisters and my moms!)

I don't reckon an hours handling is really necessary...
My rat (Rhubarb) gets taken out of the cage as I pass it...usually a few times a day...she'll sit on my shoulder for a while & we'll have a play..then she goes in again....I'd say she only gets handled for about 15 minutes a day & she's as tame as they come!

When I first had her, when she was 8 weeks old...I had her sister too (Custard)...but she died a couple of months ago.....they got handled even less when they were together, cos they were more than happy with each others company, but were still really tame..

It can have an adverse effect on them if they're handled too much...it can stress them too much & shorten their life span...but they do need to be handled regularly...even if you just tickle their chin while they're stood at the door!

BUT...please...if you do get one....get 2 (of the same sex!...females get on better together than males...but males can get on fine too)...they're social animals that don't do as well if they're kept on their own...& will have a shorter life span (if anyone knows of any female rats going spare...let me know...Rhubarb wants another friend!)

They are great pets though...real characters!!...& they don't smell as bad as mice!!!

Can anyone help me? Theres this Norwegan Blue parrot wot I bought this very afternoon who seems somewhat dormant.

I've tried taking it back to the shop, but the seller insists its just pining for the Ffords. What should I do?

No-one expects the Spainish Inquisition!

Thanks Dionne for the info about the rats.. I remember a while back the man in the shop said it was best to buy them in pairs... Yeah i used to have gerbils and we had to buy them in pairs.. but they were cannibalistic and ate each other.... Dusty ate Sweep to death .. Just hope the rats arent the same... I think im going to settle for female rats as I seem to prefer them all around.... but with horses.. I prefer males as the females are just a wee bit more temperemental.

Hmmm.. I will just go out and buy some rats whether my mom likes it or not.. Ill just keep them in my room - One more question - do they like their cage to be in the dark or in light???? As my gerbils were somewhat strange and looooved being in the dark.

Thanks Dionne again!

Ooooh eck...cannabalistic gerbils!

My rats were both girls (well..one still is!)
Not sure about the light/dark thing....mine's infront of the living room window...but behind the curtains.
I know they don't like being stuck in direct light...but I don't think they'd fancy being completely in the dark either....I reckon just keep them in normal light...wherever you'd keep any caged animal.
My rats used to spend loads of time huddled up together & cleaning each other...it was sooo sweet...
when Custard died I could really see that Rhubarb was sad, but I couldn't find another female, about the same age as her for love nor money...& I didn't want a baby cos Rhubarb would probably attack it!
(I did a study in rat behaviour for uni...you can learn so much about them if you just watch them for half an hour!)

My mum freaked when I asked her if I could keep my rats here!...I had them when I lived with my ex... when I moved out, I had to foster them out to my friend for a while till my mum let me bring them home....but now she even touches her occasionally & always talks to her!

Both my horses were female...& yes..they are temperamental!..nah...my first one was lovely..I loved her to bits..
My second one was a nut case!...she was great really...she was a thoroughbred, the friendliest horse ever....but pigs scared her...& she had panic attacks if she was tied in a corner (which no one told me about when I bought her....had to find out the hard way!)..
That's something I really miss...having a horse to go to every morning & night

Go get them rats!!

norwegian parrots??????
i thought they came from sunny places? i have a conure, who is brazilian.
anyhow, how exactly is she acting??
she should take an interest in her surroundings at least, is she eating. preening etc? if so shes ok just settling.
is she pulling out her feathers, bobbing her head exceesvely, or passing loose droppings, if so worry a bit then find a good exotics vet, i hope you have a guarantee.
also, how big is she, and how big is her cage, have you tried hndling her or letting her out. try offering her some fresh food, mine particually likes apples and grapes and mangos and strawberries, dont know what grows in norway though. or as long as she doesnt have diarhea, give her about a tablespoon of apple juice with a couple of drops of liqid vitamins in it.
make sure the cage is clean and disinfected and that she has access to clean fresh water and grit. try the parrots section in www.about.com for info on that particualr breed
